AH111  Glacial Wonders 10 Jun 2012 -
10 Sep 2012

Highlights:
  • Vatnajökull Glacier

Tour Description:

This incredible adventure will take you into Vatnajökull National Park in South East Iceland and onto the biggest glacier in Europe. We will drive along the South Coast on the Skaftafell Express Coach and have lunch at the National Park entrance before starting our adventure on Virkisjökull Glacier. We start off by boarding a bus that will take you on a scenic 15 minute drive to the glacier. There we will go for an exploratory hike on easy tracks on the glacier itself and feel the ancient ice under our feet and all around. High above us on the outlet glacier looms the massive Vatnajökull glacier in all its grandeur, a sight not soon forgotten.

Geared up on crampons (metal spikes for the soles of our shoes) we safely walk on the ice and along the way we witness spectacular ice formations, winding sink holes and deep ice crevasses. Our specially trained, highly qualified glacier guides will tell you all about Vatnajökull Glacier and the rough outlet glaciers, that like the Virkisjökull, descend from the main hub, towards the ocean.

After the glacial hike, you have about 2-3 hours of free time to enjoy the National Park on your own. At 18:00 we board the Skaftafell Express Coach again for our return journey along the south coast back to Reykjavík.

We offer different kinds of glacier tours, please click here for an overview. For instance, take a look at our AH110 Vatnajökull Voyager tour where we also visit the Jökulsárlón Glacial Lagoon.

Bring with you:

Warm outdoor clothing, waterproof jacket and pants, headwear and gloves. Good hiking shoes are recommended! You can rent hiking shoes and waterproof clothing if you need them (not included in tour price).
