AH33  Northern Lights Mystery 11 Sep 2011 -
15 Apr 2012

Highlights:
  • Search for the Northern Lights

Tour Description:

Join us for a mysterious trip, on a dark winter night. Any time from the onset of autumn darkness until the light nights of spring we can witness one of nature’s most spectacular displays; the phenomenon which we call the Northern Lights. Far from the glow of the city lights, we hunt for the elusive Aurora Borealis – known as the Northern Lights. Together we will search for these magnificent auroras. On a clear night, we may be lucky enough to see the Northern Lights swirling in a wild and carefree dance across the sky in dramatic shapes, colors, patterns and sizes.

Click here for moreThe Northern Lights are visible from September through April but can only be seen on a clear night. Therefore, we reserve the right to cancel this tour if the evening sky is heavily clouded or weather conditions are not favorable. A decision is taken daily at 6 pm whether the tour will take place or not. All hotels and booking agents in Reykjavik are informed by email about our decision so please contact the front desk of your hotel or the Tour Desk at hotel Saga, Loftleidir and Hilton to find out whether we will be operating the tour. Before we start this tour we always check the weather forecast around the south western part of Iceland. From experience, we decide where each journey will lead us, for the best possibilities to see the Northern Lights.

Please note:  We cannot guarantee sightings even if the tour is operated. In these cases we offer our customers a second tour free of charge. Please book the second tour by calling our tour desk at 540 1313.

Please note: Those that join the Northern Lights Mystery tour on 31 December may miss the fireworks in Reykjavik. The Northern Lights tour is a 3 to 5 hour tour and we cannot guarantee that we will be back in Reykjavik before midnight. If you do not want to miss the fireworks, please do not book this tour for 31 December!

We booked initially for 17th and were pleased that you dont go out when it is cloudy and allow the ticket to carry over. Shame, then that when we went on Thursday, your guide was too impatient and decided to leave to soon and so we only saw a faint glow in the sky, which looked nothing like the lights we then saw with another operator. We were also told by other guests at our hotel that they saw the lights on Thursday as their tour were determined and stayed out longer, that is why when we rebooked it was with another company.. Gateway to Iceland and I would have to rate them over yourselves. Their guide quite obvs knew his subject well and was informative and patient enough to wait for the lights.. seems I (not an Icelander) was more willing than your guide to accept that this is a Natural phenomenon that will appear according to its own timing not yours or mine.. So Sorry, but can only really give a 2... ....... Iceland Excursions: ....... Our tour is scheduled to stay out between 3-5 hours and the guide will decide when to return. Since the northern lights are never a regular occurring event at known times, there was no indication that the lights would have appeared any stronger that night. Other tour companies operating the same tour will have different time schedule, different departures and as it happend that night the lights became stronger some time after midnight. It is our goal to offer the best possible service to our passengers. By long experience we also know that although our passengers have great expectations to see this phenomenon and we try our very best to meet such expectation, the outcome is different each and every night. We are glad that you did see the northern lights stronger during your stay in Iceland.

Our expectation was something cinema-like thing: colourful, moving curtains of light. We were lucky with the clear, starry sky. First we didn't see anything, though our guide try to convince us, the cloud we saw was the Northern Lights. But we saw something completely different in photos. Then we drove to another place. It was cold, we were disappointed. Then a blurred light again. My daughter took a photo of it and suddenly cried out: I have got it. It looked completely different now in the photo. We became enthusiastic and now we saw the Northern Lights in sky, because we knew, what to look at and how. You have to learn to see it, and it reveals its splendour. My daughter liked the tour so much, that she repeated it next day. They went to another places and she could take stunning photos. It was a real chase. The guide was nice, taking us places, where there were cafes to warm up, or the scenery was amazing even at night.

Even though we didn't see the Northern Lights, the guide was absolutely delightful, and I certainly appreciate the efforts to find locations for viewing and the wonderful insights provided. The only drawback for me was the very long break at the rest-stop. After spending a day of glacier hiking, I was already tired, and having a 40 minute rest added to my fatigue. I recommend shortening time at the rest stop. Thank you for a great time.

Yes, the Northern Lights, we would see - and the Northern Lights we saw! After a certain waiting with tense gaze to the north appeared finally the coveted light in the sky, although it was rather weak and somewhat difficult to detect. We went after some time ahead and was able to stop at a place where the Northern Lights contrasted better, and now we saw very clearly how the Light danced in spirited tours in the sky. - During this journey we passed among Gljúfrasteinn where the writer and winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature, Halldor Laxness, had his home and workplace in a white house that might be said to be a serious competitor to the Northern Lights. - The guide was very friendly and knowledgeable and told us everything worth knowing both about the Northern Lights and other facts and phenomena.
