AH21  Iceland From Below & The Blue Lagoon All year round

Highlights:
  • Lava tubes
  • Craters
  • Stalactites
  • The Blue Lagoon

Tour Description:

A great combination of our tours AH15 Iceland from Below and AH29 The Blue Lagoon for those who want to make the most of their afternoon in Iceland.

The tour takes you to unique sights of Iceland’s most spectacular lava tube caves and craters. These beautiful, natural phenomena reveal extraordinary scenery of lava formations and colors.

There are no handrails, lights or any preinstalled tools in or around the caves. We rely entirely on the equipment we carry and that people respect our guidelines.

After the healthy exercise you'll be transported to the famous Blue Lagoon with a bus that leaves Reykjavík at 16:15. Once there (at around 17:15-17:30) you have many recreational options such as enjoying a meal in their á la carte restaurant, walking in the Blue Lagoon’s spectacular surroundings or bathing in the milky blue-green seawater.

For a unique experience indulge yourself with any of the various outdoor massage or a spa treatments the Lagoon has to offer.  We recommend booking this in advance by calling +354 420 8800.

The last bus back to Reykjavík leaves the Blue Lagoon at 21:00 (there is also a bus at 19:00). Please note that the busses leave on schedule, so we ask you to be at the parking lot at least 5 minutes prior to the bus departure.

Please note:  Entrance fee to the bathing area is not included in the tour price.
This tour is not recommended for children under the age of 10.

As it turned out, I was the only person on the Iceland From Below part of the trip, which meant I had a wonderful private tour with a friendly, knowledgeable and professional guide, who kept me entertained with fascinating stories about what we were looking at and Iceland in general. I enjoyed clambering around underground... almost as much as I loved soaking in the Blue Lagoon afterwards. Great afternoon!

I picked this tour by chance because it was the only one available that fit into our schedule, and it turned out to be a real gem. The tour guide spoke almost flawless English and he had a wealth of information, not just about the lava cave and the history of the surrounding lava fields, but about anything anyone happened to ask him, including Icelandic fiction novels. The cave itself was fascinating (although not optimal for the very tall). The same guide also took us to the Blue Lagoon and had some interesting background history to offer about that site, also. The Blue Lagoon itself was lovely and more than big enough to offer us plenty of space of our own. We had planned to take the early bus back but we were having such a nice time that we ate at the restaurant, whose design makes you feel like you are sitting underwater, and took the later bus back. All buses were on time and comfortable. I definitely recommend this trip.

Both of these were excellent. Setting off in a coach/truck we put on the caving gear (orange jumpsuits and hard hats - VERY necessary!) and headed off to a lava tube near Hafnarfjordur. You'd never know it was there until you happen upon it. Don't expect giant caverns with colourful cathedral-like displays of stalactites - but the caves are fascinating. It's weird to think that you're standing in a tube blasted out by hot lava, and we wondered whether a tremor would bring more rocks down from the ceiling - but out guide Matthias assured us that geologists are confident about the structural strength of the tubes! Some parts of the cave need to be crawled or even rolled through so be aware of that - one or two older members of the tour group found it rather strenuous. But it was a great experience - followed up by a trip to the Blue Lagoon. This time of year I reckon it's the perfect time of day to visit - you arrive at about 5pm, with still a good hour or more of daylight. Then, as you settle in to the amazing warmth of the pool with Arctic winds overhead, the sun sets, leaving an eerie but magical atmosphere. The pool itself closes at 8pm leaving plenty of time to change and relax before the last (9pm) transfer back to Reykjavik area hotels.

Had an amazing tour this afternoon, mainly thanks to our tour guide, John from Canada. He really knew his stuff - could effortlessly answer everyones questions and knew the backboard shortcuts very well to get back faster. He even gave us a very unexpected but excellent hike too. And the cave itself was something well selected and he made sure everyone was comfortable. I hope I get him on another Gray Line tour!

When arriving at the cave we had to wait for about 45 minutes for new flashlights for the safety helmets. This was because many of the lamps had batteries that were flat. The batteries should have been tested before we left for the trip. The caves were OK though. The visit to the Blue Lagoon was very nice, the water was hot and the weather good.

Iceland Excursions:
Our sincere apologies for the delay of fixing the helmet lights, an unusual occurance to have so many lights with flat batteries at the same time! We are glad you enjoyed the tour and the caves.
